LINK BUILDING STRATEGY

Is a pretty good article with a few pie charts showing how much both keywords and long tail key phrases gain from on page optimization as opposed to back links coming in. I copied my comment and put it here because it might be good to run with the idea and play with it, see what kind of problems there are with it, find solutions, and maybe make it work.

I tend to focus on longer tail keywords and on page optimization for sites that aren’t in horribly competitive niches, or that are mainly interested in doing business in specific geographic area that area easier to rank well for.

I get link requests a few times a week sometimes, but they all want two way links buried on hidden “resource” pages as if this were still 1998.

So I write them back once in a while (though it’s a waste of time) and tell them why it’s better to make keyword rich text links that are written into the context of the content of their site pages, and offer to do three, four or five way links with them that way. If I could find a few other people with enough diversity in their sites we could work something out like a link from a doctors office to an organic skin care products page that treats psoriasis to an alternative Native American medicine web site to a Native American Trading Post to something else etc.

I think that linking between thousands of sites would be much easier to manage amongst very large groups of SEO/Web Designers if small cells of five SEO’s worked together. It would work like a standard pyramid in the same fashion as MLM (Multi Level Marketing), but with equal benefits to all depending upon the quality of their sites. It would have to be arranged top-down, of course, with recruitment done under each of the first five members. Each of the first five would locate four other SEO’s and work with them, so that together the first five would have recruited a total of 20 member SEO’s. In turn, the 20 new members would be responsible (through social networking, conventions, or in whatever way each was best capable of doing it) work to locate and recruit four further SEO/Web Designers. So the third level would consist of 20 X 4 or 80 (bringing the total level of membership up to 105). The process would then repeat itself where each of the 80 would reach out for four new members each, bringing in 320 more SEO’s, and the total number in the group to 405, and so on.

From each crew of five, the recruiting agent will make available the number and type of sites that can be linked to, and from which links can be made pointing outward. After a period of time if that representative no longer wants the position of liaison or there is someone else the group agrees would do the job they can switch out the role for someone else to do.


As long as the only ones involved understand basic SEO and web marketing principles it’s not just another dummy two way link farm scheme, but a way to apply a little bit of intelligent design to linking strategy and build trust relationships between a lot of professionals across the country who probably most often won’t be in direct competition with one another the majority of the time trying to get the same product or the same service ranked. Even if they are vying for the same page one ranking for similar terms, there’s still room and much of what counts toward conversion will still rely upon the copywritten offers of exchange which are dependent to a large degree on the owners of the sites themselves.
